The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side near the Kenyan border. Known for its quieter trails, gentle gradients, and scenic wilderness, the Rongai Route is an excellent choice for climbers seeking a less crowded experience with a high chance of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). The 7-day itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day, improving summit success while allowing trekkers to enjoy the mountain's diverse landscapes. The descent follows the scenic Marangu Route, offering a different perspective of Africa's highest mountain.

After breakfast, drive to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. Complete park registration before beginning your trek through farmland, pine forest, and beautiful montane forest. Keep an eye out for monkeys and a variety of bird species before arriving at Simba Camp.

Today's trek follows a gentle uphill trail through open moorland with stunning views across the Kenyan plains. Arrive at Second Cave in the afternoon with plenty of time to relax and acclimatize.

Continue your gradual ascent across the mountain's northern slopes. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Kikelewa Camp, surrounded by giant senecios and spectacular alpine scenery.

Today is dedicated to acclimatization. You will take a short hike towards Mawenzi Peak while returning to Horombo Hut for overnight rest. This extra day helps your body adapt to higher altitude and improves your chances of reaching the summit.

The trek continues across the alpine desert known as the Saddle, located between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes more rugged as you approach Kibo Hut, where you will rest and prepare for the final summit attempt.

Distance: 22 km | Hiking Time: 12–15 hours

You will begin the summit attempt around midnight. The challenging climb takes you through the volcanic scree to Gilman's Point (5,681m), followed by the final walk along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos at the summit, descend back to Kibo Hut for breakfast before continuing down to Horombo Hut. Later, descend through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi.
